Our Story

Our journey began in 1979 with a single breakthrough: Canada’s first commercial ultra-light rigid-frame wheelchair, a product that forever changed the mobility landscape. Inspired by this success, our company continued to build, or import innovate products for decades, growing and evolving to meet the changing needs of our customers. In 2002, we proudly became 49 Bespoke Inc., a name that reflects our focus on personalized service and world-class products. We honor our heritage of innovation with end user-tested products delivered in a hybrid distribution model that channels sales through the dealer network and direct to end user customers providing both with a lifelong service commitment.

The Name "49"

49 Bespoke” comes from the jersey numbers worn by our founders: Reg McClellan (#4) and Chantal Benoit (#9). Their combined 49 years competing at the highest levels of wheelchair basketball, bring unmatched commitment to being the best they can at what they do, and they wear it on their sleeve.  That legacy is absorbed by the TEAM (Together Everyone Achieves More) and shapes product choice, every fit (bespoke), every job performed, and the follow-up provided at 49 Bespoke Inc.

Mission & Promise

Mission: Help every business customer to deliver the best product and service for their customer. And provide every end user customer the opportunity to achieve what they want whether it is better posture, comfort, and usability through a custom-fit process or simply the product to get the job done. Our hybrid model supports business and end user customers.

Promise: Our work doesn’t end at delivery — we support installs and troubleshooting via phone, FaceTime, Zoom, Teams, Google Meet, WhatsApp, or Signal with a fit guarantee or the product does not go into service. If we cannot do anything about a fitting situation, we will take the new information and build a product that does the job.

Our Bespoke Custom-Fit Process

Assessment

We are not journalists, but we need to know, who are we working with, why do you need a chair, what do you have now and what would you change, when do you use it, where do you use it …

R

Philosophy

We believe that less is more … that you are building a product to best meet your needs to get from A to B … what do you believe is best for you … you are the customer and you are the one calling the shots … and it is appropriate to involve anyone you feel is going to help you be successful in building the best product to meet your needs … we will always have a person with lived experience to work with you, but that person could be as far off base as anyone else when it comes to meeting your needs … that is why you are the customer and the boss of the process.

We subscribe to a snug fit philosophy for those that cannot fix their pelvis in a wheelchair by pushing off with a leg. We feel this will keep muscle tissue under them to provide better pressure distribution, better balance, better maneuverability, and a biomechanical stroke that ensures good muscle use while enhancing propulsion.

Design

Measurement is philosophical in large part, but all manufacturers will have a specification sheet to complete and each measurement will be a discussion point to ultimately capture in CAD view of the frame geometry and components specified (which includes seat width, seat depth, seat height front and back, camber, axle placement, back angle, caster setup, and a plethora of accessories).

R

FEW

Functioning every day with a wheelchair (FEW) folks underline the following points: Stability, durability, dependability, Comfort Needs, Health Needs, Operation of the equipment, Reach or height, Transfer issues, Personal Care, Indoor Mobility, Outdoor Mobility, and Transportation needs.

Build

Hand-built by dedicated technicians in house or partners to ensure precision and consistency. The world has a number of fantastic manufacturers building a one off product and a number building very good products in a more commercial way with off the shelf parts and pieces being assembled to quickly produce a product for any customer.

R

Delivery & Set Up

Delivery, adjustments, and education for optimal posture and propulsion. Open communication continues …

R

Aftercare

Remote check-ins, parts, and performance tweaks over the product life. Quadra warranty in 1979 may have been the first to offer life of the original purchaser. Today, it is life of the original purchaser or five years, whichever comes first. We have customers from 1979, answer the phone, and strive to meet any and all challenges presented daily!

How long does it take to get a wheelchair?

With over 250 wheelchairs in the shop, 49 Bespoke Inc. is able to meet needs immediately, but folks go to 49 Bespoke Inc. for a one off build and the process to nail down specifications, get the drawing if necessary, finalize the funding, confirm the build with the manufacturer can take 6-8 weeks and if there is any hold up on confirming this or that, it can drag on for a year. We work hard to do our part and demand that the end user be fully engaged in the process and sometimes that takes more time. We don’t want to sell somebody something; we want people to buy something that they know is going to enhance their lifestyle!

What is your Hybrid Distribution Model?

49 Bespoke Inc. has a Hybrid distribution channel meaning they combine both direct and indirect distribution channels to reach customers. The industry in Canada has funders who prefer restricting who can access their resources to meet the needs of someone who qualifies from their funding. There are individuals who need our products that do not have any other funding or do not have a dealer that they work with. This model allows us to reach individuals with product that does not have any funding attached to it while simultaneously working with retailers and marketplaces to have our products more accessible to a wider audience.
